Allison Anders

Allison Anders is a world renowned filmmaker whose films include Gas Food Lodging (1992), Mi Vida Loca (1993), Grace of My Heart (1996) and Things Behind the Sun (2001). She has been awarded a MacArthur Genius Grant and a Peabody Award.

Andrew Schwartz
|
Andrew Schwartz has been an Administrative Judge and attorney for the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission. He is a past President of Hollywood Heritage, and President of Beyond Baroque, the poetry center in Venice, California.

Austin Gold
|
Austin Gold graduated from Ithaca College in 2017 and has since worked on numerous feature films, commercials, music videos, and television shows. His credits include Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman. He is currently a writer and associate producer for Turner Classic Movies.

Barbara Zicka Smith
|
Barbara Zicka Smith co-founded the nonprofit American Cinematheque and served as its Executive Director from 1992 to 2018. Under her leadership, the Cinematheque came to be regarded as one of the premiere organizations of its kind.

Cliff Retallick
|
Cliff Retallick is Retroformat’s Musical Director and a founding board member. He is the resident accompanist for the UCLA Film and Television Archive, Quentin Tarantino’s New Beverly Cinema and many other venues. His live music series, Babylon Cabaret, now enjoys a monthly residency at El CID nightclub. He has arranged and played on tracks for Alice Cooper, Smokey Robinson, Wanda Jackson, Billy Joel, Kiss, Garth Brooks, Dion, and many others.

David Slaughter
|
David Slaughter is a Digital Imaging Specialist who is also a silent film collector and former manager of Los Angeles’ Silent Movie Theatre. He was a film line-up editor on Technicolor’s recent restoration of Orson Welles’ final film, The Other Side of the Wind. He is currently responsible for digitizing all the the films in the Retroformat Vault.

Dino Everett

Dino Everett is the archivist of the HMH Moving Image Archive at the University of Southern California. He has published numerous articles on the history of the moving image.

J.C. Wenhold
|
J.C. Wenhold is a Marketing Specialist and Designer currently based in the New York City Metropolitan Area/New Jersey. J.C. has created visually compelling marketing assets for unique industry brands like Kino Lorber, Zeitgeist Films, and Gracie Films; and film nonprofits throughout the United States like Renew Theaters (Pennsylvania & New Jersey) and the Los Angeles Silent Film Festival. He is influenced by historic design styles to create work that is vintage-inspired.

Kelby Thwaits

Kelby Thwaits, MFA, is an accomplished Actor, Singer, Musician and Media Artist in Los Angeles, CA, known for his work on Mass Effect 2: Sci vs. Fi (2010), Dead Space: Downfall (2008), Gears of War 2: Sci vs. Fi (2008) and Cinderella Man (2005).
He has created, developed and produced original content for Spike TV, SyFy Channel, VH1, MTV, Disney, Sony Online Entertainment. He enjoys working across multiple genres and styles including hybrid and mixed media. His acting, singing, voice work and original music may be found in film, television, radio, theatre and video games. Select theatre credits include starring roles in Jekyll & Hyde, Camelot, Into the Woods, and many more. He is currently the Director of Graduate Programs in Film, Television and New Media at Mount Saint Mary's University's, Hollywood Studio Campus. |
Marc Wannamaker

Marc Wanamaker is one of the world's foremost historians of motion pictures and Los Angeles history, with more than fifty years of research experience. Founder of the Bison Archives, he has served as a historical consultant to major film studios, museums, archives, and institutions including the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Getty Research Institute, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. An internationally recognized author and lecturer, he has written or contributed to more than forty books on film history, Hollywood, and Southern California. His work has played a vital role in preserving and interpreting the history of the motion picture industry for audiences around the world.

Randy Haberkamp
|
Randy Haberkamp is a film historian who recently retired as the Executive Vice President of the Library, Archive and Sci-Tech for the Academy of MotionPicture Arts and Sciences, where he held various positions for 23 years. He worked for the CBS Television Network for 14 years culminating as Director of Specials and Feature Films. He has worked as a freelance television producer and as a talent agent and is the founder of The Silent Society of Hollywood Heritage, a silent film preservation and appreciation group that has presented and preserved silent films in Los Angeles for over 40 years. He currently presents programs regularly at Old Town Music Hall in El Segundo and continues to be an advocate for film preservation and research.

Steven K. Hill

Steven K. Hill, Chief Programmer of the Los Angeles Silent Film Festival, is the
Motion Picture Archivist at the UCLA Film & Television Archive, and co-founder of The Silent Treatment e-digest and screening series in L.A. A co-founder of the internationally celebrated Silent Movie Day, he is a graduate of the UCLA Moving Image Archive Studies (MIAS) MA program, and has previously worked at Sony Pictures and Universal Television. |
Thomas Barnes

Thomas Barnes has been a passionate collector and advocate of silent cinema for most of his life. In 2009, he began presenting screenings from his personal film collection at Hollywood's Egyptian Theatre as a volunteer with the nonprofit American Cinematheque. In 2019, he founded Retroformat Silent Films, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving, promoting, and celebrating silent cinema. Under his leadership, the organization became one of Los Angeles' leading silent film repertory organizations, presenting rare and significant works from the silent era while building a growing audience for the art form. As the annual festival became the organization's central focus, it officially changed its corporate name from Retroformat Silent Films to the Los Angeles Silent Film Festival, reflecting its expanded mission of bringing silent cinema to new audiences through theatrical screenings with live musical accompaniment.

Angela Williamson, PhD is the Emmy-nominated filmmaker of My Life with Rosie, about her cousin, Rosa Parks. She hosts the weekly talk show Everybody with Angela Williamson on KLCS-PBS, which discusses diversity in education and the arts.

Anthony Slide
|
Anthony Slide is the author or editor of 200+ books on popular entertainment, former resident historian of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and an archivist of the American Film Institute. He was named “our pre-eminent historian of the silent film” by legendary actor Lillian Gish.

Brooke Dammkoehler
|
Brooke Dammkoehler, MFA, is a founder of our annual festival and one of its most active committee members. A filmmaker who loves collaborating with other filmmakers and creatives to bring artistic visions to life on a variety of projects, from shorts to features and live performances to music videos. Brooke was a producer and music supervisor on the landmark Asian-American film Charlotte Sometimes (2002) by writer/director Eric Byler, and recently supervised its 20th anniversary restoration and re-release. She is a board advisor and adjunct programmer to the DjarFogo International Film Festival, which showcases West African and pan-African filmmakers and filmmakers of the African diaspora. She has a BA from Brown University and an MFA in Film and TV from Mount Saint Mary’s University. Brooke is a proud member of IATSE Local 871.
Brooke’s personal work explores themes/issues of identity and community. She is equally at home in the independent and the studio worlds. Brooke works in production finance as a production account on features, scripted television (incl. animation) and reality TV for companies such as Apple, Marvel, Evolution/MGM, Netflix and Legendary. |
Iain Kennedy

Iain Kennedy is an Emmy-nominated producer, writer and editor, known for his work on television’s Biography series and documentary films including Citizen Stan (2004) and Shout Gladi Gladi (2015). In 2010, he was the producer, writer and director of Palace of Silents, a definitive history of Hollywood’s fabled Silent Movie Theater.

Janet Klein

Janet Klein is an entertainer, band leader and musical archaeologist of rare songs from the 1910s to the 1930s. Janet and her Parlor Boys regularly entertain audiences in Los Angeles. She is also known for her vintage style graphic work in print.

Jeffery Masino

Jeffery Masino is a producer of original content and restored cinema classics through his company, Flicker Alley. He has produced dozens of broadcasts with Turner Entertainment Networks (Turner Classic Movies). His latest work at Digital Bedrock (www.digitalbedrock.com) is focused on digital archives, so that audiences will always have access to cinema classics.

Karie Lynn Bible

Karie Lynn Bible was a member of our founding BOD. She co-authored Location Filming in Los Angeles (Images of America) with Marc Wanamaker and Hollywood Celebrates the Holidays: 1920 - 1970 with Mary Mallory, and created the weekly online newsletter FilmRadar.com. She is an official tour guide for Hollywood Forever Cemetery and has appeared on Turner Classic Movies, CNN and the History Channel.

Lynda Leibrock is an executive professional with over 37 years experience in accounting, operational and financial management of for-profit and non-profit organizations. She founded her own consulting business in 2010, Cornerstone Business Services, LLC, and is the author and international instructor of How to Start a Nonprofit curriculum.

Margot Gerber

Margot Gerber is President of the Art Deco Society of L.A. She was instrumental in campaigning for historic cultural monument status for the Hollywood Reporter building and many other Los Angeles landmarks. She is a board member of Hollywood Heritage. She works in film marketing and publicity, and spent 28 years working with the non-profit American Cinematheque.

Sean P. Malone

Sean P. Malone is a Director of Photography and a film professor at Vanguard University. His cinematography has won awards at film festivals from Los Angeles to Miami. He co-founded Waterfoot Films, an independent film company, and is directing the upcoming sports documentary, Wild About ‘88.

Suzanne Lloyd

Suzanne Lloyd is the president of Harold Lloyd Entertainment, which she created in 2001 to license the films of her grandfather, legendary silent film comedian Harold Lloyd. She is the sole trustee of the Harold Lloyd library.

Tracey Goessel

Tracey Goessel is a physician and an entrepreneur, but her true passion is silent film history. In 2015, she wrote and published The First King of Hollywood, a biography of Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. She founded the nonprofit Film Preservation Society (FPS), which has restored several silent films. FPS’ current goal is to restore all 460 short films by D.W. Griffith made between 1908 and 1913.
